Fresh Flower Arranging Basics – Introductory Level

Course Outline:

 
Lecture Topics: 

  • History of Floral Designs through the decades.
  • Tool Use and Safety (knife vs. pruners, thorns and wire)
  • Tips for finding fresh product and using it in your arrangements.  
  • ‘The Wiring Myth’ – Why it is not usually necessary if flowers are fresh and adequately hydrated.
  • Vases/ Budvases/ Containers – Choosing appropriate vases based on bouquet proportions and style, vase cleaning/prep, lining, water depth, etc.
  • Basic Flower and Foliage Identification - Types of flowers (face/ focal flowers, laterals, fillers, foliages)
  • Basic Color Theory (Primary, secondary, tertiary, monochromatic, jewel tones/ pastels/ sunset shades, neutrals/naturals)

Demonstration and Hands-On Lessons:

  • Demo: Basic Flower care and processing
  • Demo: Designing a dozen roses (stem length, freshness check, about lack of scent, vase in proportion to stem length, filler, special aftercare for roses – bent neck) Classic Style vs. contemporary.
  • Demo and Hands-On Lesson: Basic hand tied bouquet construction.

Cool Down and Wrap-up!

  • Aftercare – Changing water and re-cutting stems to open vascular tissue, incorporating a flower ‘food’ at recommended rate and home alternatives.

Materials Provided:

Apron, Gloves, Basic tools, Flowers, Supplies, Ribbon. We will have extra Florist shears/pruners, wire cutters, Ribbon Shears for purchase. A recap sheet with intro info and links for further study will be provided at the end of class.

Refunds: All individual (non-private) classes are fully refundable up until 14 days prior to the class date. After that time, 50% of your class registration fee may be credited to a new class as long as your cancellation is received no later than 72 hours prior to class time. Sorry, but all cancellations after this time cannot be credited. Private events and classes will be refunded according to the agreement which will be sent to you under separate email. Any classes cancelled by Adelaide’s due to low attendance or circumstances beyond our control are fully refundable or can be credited to another upcoming class.


ADDITIONAL COSTS & DISCOUNTS: While basic supplies needed for the class will be provided for your use while you are in attendance, (Apron, cutters, basic supplies such as wire, tape, glue, etc.) there are a few classes where the cost of chosen containers, flowers and other supplies are not. Please check your class description to determine if any flowers, containers, etc. are included in the price of the class. Please note that you can always supplement (by purchasing) any product being used if you prefer a different look or color. We will have new supplies for sale, as well, should you wish your own instead of using those being lent to you. As a class attendee you will receive a 15% DISCOUNT on all (non-holiday) supplies, flowers, containers, giftware, etc. purchased on the day of your class.
